CHARLEY CHASE - "THE HECKLER" (1940) Two-reel comedy classic!
Просмотров 16 тыс.9 лет назад
Hilarious two-reel comedy classic from Columbia. Produced by the Hugh McCollum unit, directed by Del Lord. Charley plays the nameless title character, an obnoxious loudmouth who delights in bedeviling players and anyone within sitting distance at sporting events.
SHEMP HOWARD - "WHERE THE PEST BEGINS" (1945) CHRISTINE McINTYRE
Просмотров 108 тыс.9 лет назад
Before he rejoined the Three Stooges team in 1947, Shemp Howard had his own solo 2-reeler comedy series at Columbia Pictures. This 1945 release doesn't have much of a story...inventor Tom Kennedy moves next door to 'human horsefly' Shemp, who proceeds to make his life miserable in a series of wacky slapstick encounters. If you like Shemp you'll like this flick, because it's all Shemp from start...
'REDSKIN BLUES' 1932 Van Beuren Tom and Jerry Cartoon
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.9 лет назад
Another cartoon outing with Van Beuren's happy-go-lucky duo, Tom and Jerry (Not to be confused with the much better-known MGM cat and mouse team). With plenty of the Van Beuren brand of surrealism and sights gags and a peppy Rodemich score. Enjoy!

BARNYARD BUNK - 1932 TOM AND JERRY CARTOON - VAN BEUREN STUDIO
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.11 лет назад
When the Van Beuren cartoons were sold to a firm called Official Films in the 1940s a number of the original titles were changed to make them more appealing to the home movie market. Van Beuren's Tom and Jerry team were retitled as "Dick and Larry" to avoid confusion with MGM's well-known cat and mouse duo. This is a typically fun early-30s Van Beuren, with funny gags and a delightful Gene Rode...
LOVE NEST ON WHEELS - BUSTER KEATON - 1937 Two-reel comedy - Educational Pictures - Al St. John
Просмотров 5 тыс.11 лет назад
It's hillbilly hi-jinx with Buster Keaton and company in this 1937 comedy from Educational Pictures. A family of yokels is in danger of losing their hotel home unless they can get a city couple to buy a trailer they happen to have for $350. This was the last in a series of two-reelers Keaton starred in for Educational and it's a goodie with a great cast including Lynton Brent, Bud Jamison and A...
OLD MOTHER HUBBARD - UB IWERKS (1935) ComiColor cartoon - music by Carl Stalling
Просмотров 13 тыс.11 лет назад
The Ub Iwerks cartoon studio of the 1930s doesn't get a lot of love from cartoon fans or historians. But they did turn out a number of totally unique films during their heyday. I first became aware of this cartoon when it was presented in a shortened version by the King of Cartoons during a Pee Wee's Playhouse episode back in 1986. It has a mesmerizing, surreal quality one scene flows into the ...
VAN BEUREN CARTOON CARNIVAL, PART 2 - "A Toytown Tale" - "The Animal Fair"
Просмотров 18 тыс.11 лет назад
We continue with Part 2 of our look at cartoons from the New York cartoon studio of Van Beuren from the early years of sound cartoons. Up first is 'A Toytown Tale,' continued from VAN BEUREN CARTOON CARNIVAL, PART 1. You will see some nifty animation bits here! Next up is "The Animal Fair" (1931) in its entirety! It has enough weird, unreal sight gags, jazzy Rodemich music and crude drawing to ...
Oliver Hardy solo comedies - Directed by Stan Laurel - Part 1 (1924-5) "Yes, Yes, Nanette"
Просмотров 62 тыс.11 лет назад
This is Part 1 in a collection of short films featuring Oliver Hardy in the years before he teamed up with Stan Laurel. First up is Larry Semon's racing car comedy "Kid Speed" (1924). Semon was a star film comedian of the day and Ollie was a member of his stock company. This short is loaded with wild stunts and sight gags. Boxing legend James J. Jeffries has a small role as a blacksmith. Next u...
VAN BEUREN CARTOON CARNIVAL, PART 1 - "A Close Call" (1929), "A Dizzy Day" (1933)
Просмотров 28 тыс.11 лет назад
This is the first in a series collecting the rare and oddball cartoons of the Van Beuren cartoon studio (1928-36). The studio got its start just as cartoons were making the transition from silents to sound. "A Close Call" (1929) is a fun if primitive example of the early Van Beuren style. The boy and girl mouse characters are clear copies of Mickey and Minnie Mouse.... and Walt Disney took lega...
I DON'T REMEMBER (1935) HARRY LANGDON comedy classic - Columbia 2-reeler!
Просмотров 6 тыс.11 лет назад
Harry plays a wacky artist with the faultiest memory anyone's ever seen. Fast paced comedy fun this is the one where he paints furniture on the walls. Featuring Vernon Dent, Geneva Mitchell and Mary Carr. Directed by Preston Black. Black also receives onscreen credit for story and screenplay although Langdon surely had a hand in shaping the gags.
Drive-in theater vintage short films - late 50s, early 60s - intermission, refreshments- cartoons!

Drive-in movie theaters are a bygone venue of American entertainment. Most of them literally disappeared in the 1980s. This is a collection of short films designed to be shown in between features and short subjects. Lots of wacky late 50s- early sixties ads, some animated, and PSAs, etc......enjoy!

THE LUCKY DOG (1921) 1ST LAUREL AND HARDY TEAM-UP
Просмотров 59 тыс.13 лет назад
This historic film shows the first on-screen teaming of legendary funnymen Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Stan stars in this Sun-Lite Pictures comedy written and directed by Jess Robbins. Ollie appears as a bandit who sticks up Stan and they interact for a few minutes of slapstick fun. While the clip indicates this was made in 1919, imdb lists it as 1921. It offers an interesting look at Laurel'...

Anyone know how these ads or multiple one reel cartoons worked at drive-ins? For example when they played 9 cartoons from different distributors how did thsy get these 9 reels to show the cartoons back to back and how often did the projector need attended to?

It’s much safer compared to drinking and driving because flying a plane is safer in general. There’s no obstacles like other fliers you have to worry about.

Ah there it is, the weird cut version of Lucky Dog. I had a DVD-boxset years ago with two versions of Lucky Dog on it; a 'special edition' in the bonus menu, containing a longer version (as in, an entire ending-piece to it) and the 'regular' version, which turned out to be... this. It's definitely a videotape-transfer (you see the videoline at the bottom and the signal disappearing at the very end), but I do not get why or how this was made the way it was. It ends so abrupt. Thanks for showing me this again! :)

Maybe it's just the familiarity, but I like Shemp's version more. The image quality isn't as good; maybe the film wasn't as well kept. But now I really want to know more about Columbia's other, non-Stooge, two-reel films.

There should be a doc. movie behind this man. Admittedly, growing up, Shemp was #2 behind Curly. But growing up and seeing more raw Shemp and his solo acts, you could see a more comfortable body. Maybe indused to his high level of anxiety and etc. Not putting negative light at all, but for me personally a more interest in the phychy of his methods. But without divulging into the deep, this is a lost classic and appreciated.

Shemp was all Three Stooges rolled into one. He was the second oldest of the Howard brothers , and was smart enough to be the first one to exit away from Ted Healey, and go on his own. Christine of course was beautiful , however Rebel Randall ( Shemp's wife ) was serious eye candy. The studio tried to play this as a blond against brunette episode. In my eyes , the brunette won. Gosh what a woman. Tall , brunette , and just all around a babe ! The problem with her off screen , is she was married three times and none of her marriages lasted more than one year. A couple of them , only a couple of months. If you read her Bio online , every producer , director , and actor, wanted to " get their hands on her " which they did. Sad story but true. I live in this town and work in it. " Hollywood " can be a great or disastrous place, depending on your perspective or values...

Br A-Shemp was the oldest of the three Howard brothers. Actually, Irving was the first born, but he never entered show biz, and was dead when this short was filmed. Brother Jack was next, but he, too, never entered show biz, selling insurance instead. After Shemp died, there were no more Howard brothers to turn to.
